Skin fasting (german: "skin fasting") describes the process of reducing products in the skincare routine to the bare minimum. It can even stand for the complete renunciation of such products – including make-up – for a certain period of time.

The idea behind Skin Fasting is to give the skin a break in which it can find its way back to its natural balance without the help of products. Skin fasting can also be an effective way to identify skincare products that irritate your skin and thus do more harm than good.

There are no scientific studies on the effectiveness of skin fasting so far. However, followers of regular skin fasting report that the practice keeps their skin in a healthy balance and that they have gotten rid of impurities, eczema and irritation in this way.

The idea of skin fasting is based on the assumption that healthy skin does not need any care products at all. There are no comprehensive medical studies on this. From a dermatological point of view, however, many functions that peelings and moisturizers, for example, are intended to perform are naturally inherent in the skin:

  • Human skin cells, for example, renew themselves in a 28-day cycle without the need for peeling.
  • The sebum from the skin's own sebaceous glands not only moisturises the skin, but also protects it from environmental stressors.
  • Furthermore, countless beneficial bacteria naturally live on the skin, which protect it in the right balance from the penetration of harmful bacteria and germs.

Skin Fasting is designed to give your skin the opportunity to take over these inherent functions on its own, making it less dependent on skincare products. Often these products are too aggressive. Many washing gels strip the skin of its natural moisture, which then has to be replenished through creams. They also remove the beneficial bacteria. Mechanical or chemical peels often have an irritating effect and damage the skin's protective barrier in the long term. All of this, in turn, can lead to problems such as dry skinacne, dermatitis, and other eczema.

Skin Fasting is designed to help the skin rebuild its protective barrier and healthy bacterial colonization, as well as balance sebum production. The result should be healthy, even skin that gets by with a minimum of care products.

  • You decide for yourself how radical your skin fasting should be.
    • Variant one: Start by reducing your skincare routine to a mild cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen for at least one to four weeks.
    • Variant two: Leave out all care products and only wash your face with lukewarm water in the morning and evening. If you are exposed to sunlight, it is still important to apply sunscreen.
  • Make sure you drink enough water during skin fasting to moisturize your skin from the inside out.
  • Be patient and give your skin time to balance. It is quite possible that she will show withdrawal symptoms in the form of dryness, more oiliness and/or more blemishes in the first one to two weeks.
  • You can regularly incorporate Skin Fasting into your everyday life. It doesn't have to be several weeks every time. For example, try giving up care products two evenings or one day a week.
